Wilson Okwuobu, Scottsdale Community College Student, Takes Home The 2019 Big Pitch Grand Prize

After a challenging week of business education, 11 Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) students from across the Valley competed to win The Big Pitch, CEI’s student startup challenge. On Wednesday, March 20, each student pitched business ideas before an audience and judging panel that consisted of Dr. Karla Fisher, Provost of MCCCD; James Goulka, Managing Director of AZ Tech Investors; Geoffrey Ossias, a partner at Perkins Coie; and Tom Zender, local CEO Mentor & Business Coach.

bioSyntagma Awarded $200k Phase I NIH SBIR Grant to Advance Development of a Next-Generation Single-Cell Biomarker Discovery Platform

bioSyntagma, LLC, a precision medicine company, has been awarded a nearly $200,000 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a new platform for mapping multi-omic biomarkers from single-cells in cancer patient biopsies. bioSyntagma’s Principal Scientist, Dmitry Derkach, M.D., Ph.D., is the Principal Investigator for the project.

the Winner of the Big Pitch is... Ronnie Ruiz!

Community colleges are no longer just places to get an Associate’s degree or to take some gen-ed credits that can apply to a university program. At the Maricopa Community College District, some students are taking courses in preparation to launch their own business. Recognizing this, the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation — a business incubator located on the GateWay Community College Campus — launched The Big Pitch, a student startup challenge that put participating students through a high-impact accelerator for a chance to win over $20,000 in cash and services. After learning from over two dozen seasoned business leaders, Estrella Mountain College student and owner of Kustom Tyres and Supplies (KT&S), Ronnie Ruiz, won the grand prize.
